What is a Scleroglucan?

  • Scleroglucan is a natural polysaccharides, produced by fungi of the genus Sclerotium , that has been extensively studied for various commercial applications.
  • The chemical structure consists of β-1,3-D-glucose residues with on β-1,6-D-glucose side chain every three main residues.
  • The remarkable rheological properties and stability over a wide range of pH's, sanitise, and temperatures make this neutral non-ionic polysaccharides suitable for various applications.

Features

High thermal stability

  • Unlike most natural and synthetic gums, high temperatures have little effect on the viscosity of a solution of scleroglucan.
  • Below 10℃ (50°F), a solution of scleroglucan has a semigelled appearance that disappears when shaken or heated.
  • Solution of scleroglucan may be sterilized by heating at 121℃(250°F) for 20 hours without affecting the viscosity.

High viscosity

  • Scleroglucan solution has a pseudoplastic behavior, with a high-yield value, resulting in solutions of high suspension power with good pouring properties

Anti-settling properties

  • Scleroglucan solution is extremely effective in holding particles in suspension, in static as well as in dynamic conditions, without the risk of sedimentation

Compatibilities

  • Due to its non-ionic characteristic scleroglucan is not affected by acids and alkalis over a wide pH range (2.5 to 12).
  • It is compatible, without synergism, with most of the other thickeners such as guar gum, locust bean gum, alginate, gelatin, xanthan gum, carrageenans, and cellulose derivatives

Applications in pharmaceutical fields

  • The use of scleroglucan as an antitumor, antiviral and antimicrobial compound has also been investigated. Its potential contribution to the treatment of many diseases should be taken into account in therapeutic regimens. Recently, the attractive properties of the polysaccharide in controlled drug release(Shrikant A, 2007)

Immune strengthening effect

  • Scleroglucan is a scientifically proven biological defense modifi er (BDM) that nutritionally potentates and modulates the immune response.
  • Scleroglucan has shown immune stimulatory effects compared with other biopolymers (scleroglucan>schizophyllan >lentinan) (Patchen L, 2000).
  • The use of scleroglucan as an antitumor, antiviral and antimicrobial compound has also been investigated.

Safety

  • β-1,6-branched-β-1,3-glucan was approved by the FDA in 1983 (GRAS)
  • Scleroglucan is clinically administered and its safety in the human body has already been confirmed.
